A Casual Guide to Actually Enjoying Horror Games (Yes, Even You)
I used to think horror games weren't for me. The jump scares, the dark hallways, the constant feeling that something is about to leap out of the shadows — it all seemed like a recipe for a bad night. But somewhere along the way, I caved. A friend dared me to try one, and honestly, I'm kind of glad I did. Horror games, when played with the right mindset, are some of the most immersive and emotionally rewarding experiences in gaming. And if you're curious about where to start, this article is for you.
We're going to talk about how to actually enjoy a horror game — not just survive it, but genuinely have a good time. And the example I'll keep coming back to is FNaF, the game that somehow turned animatronic mascots into some of the most unsettling creatures in gaming history.
What You're Actually Doing in FNaF
If you've never played it, the premise is deceptively simple. You're a night security guard at a pizza place called Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Your job is to sit in a small office from midnight to 6 AM and make sure the animatronic characters roaming the building don't reach you. That's it. No weapons, no running, no hiding under a desk. Just you, a few security cameras, and a pair of heavy metal doors.
The gameplay revolves around resource management and awareness. You have a limited power supply that feeds your lights, your doors, and your camera system. Every time you check a camera, flip on a light, or close a door, you burn through that power. Run out, and the lights go dark. The doors slide open. And then — well, you can probably guess what happens next.
What makes FNaF work so well as a horror experience isn't gore or elaborate storylines. It's tension. Pure, slow-building tension. You spend most of your time staring at a static-filled monitor, tracking blurry silhouettes as they move from room to room, trying to decide whether that sound you just heard was Foxy running down the hallway or just your imagination. The game doesn't need to show you the monster. It lets your brain do the terrifying work for it.
There are five nights to survive, each one progressively harder as the animatronics get smarter, faster, and more aggressive. You learn their patterns. You develop routines. And just when you think you've got it figured out, the game throws something new at you and ruins your carefully built sense of control.
